Debora Goodwill, Assistant Principal

I’m excited to continue my service in education at the Grafton High School.  I joined GHS in the summer of 2022, after 28 years at West Boylston Middle High School as the Wellness: Health/PE leader. During this time I taught grades 6-12, coached cheerleading and collaborated with students, staff and the community to create positive experiences in school. Additionally, I’ve done consulting work in the areas of trauma-informed practices, school culture and student-led programming. I look forward to becoming part of the dynamic community of Grafton. I reside in Princeton with my husband and two dogs. In my free time I enjoy swimming, tennis, yoga, pilates and of course time with my family and friends.

I have had the privilege of being a teacher, assistant principal, instructional coach, assistant superintendent, director of teaching and learning, and now co-principal in the past twenty years. I spent the first decade of my career at Nashoba Regional High School where I was an English teacher and an assistant principal. I came to Grafton as the assistant superintendent. For seven years, I worked with our leadership team to support curriculum, instruction, and assessment in grades K-12. While I was honored to be our assistant superintendent, I missed working directly with students and staff. For this reason, I became director of teaching and learning and then co-principal of Grafton High School. I am committed to creating an environment in which students can meet their full potential and feel privileged to be a small part of our outstanding efforts to meet adolescents’ evolving needs.

Personally, I am passionate about instructional excellence. I have developed a deep understanding of the learning sciences and their impact on teaching and learning. Additionally, I enjoy offering professional development workshops for teachers in Grafton and staff across the state.  My first great love, however, is my children. I am blessed with two adult sons whom I admire and respect. In my free time, I read, write, exercise, and travel.

After starting my career as a guidance counselor back in 1997, I have held various school leadership positions over the past 20 years including assistant principal, principal, director, superintendent, and professional consultant.

I came to Grafton High School during the infamous 2019-2020 school year as a short-term administrator to assist Principal Jim Pignataro during a period of transition for the school. Little did we know that the world would turn upside down in March of 2020 and we would need to “rethink” high school education and change how we do things. That we did.

Since becoming Principal in 2021, I continue to be impressed with the support of this community to be creative in how we design programs and services for teenagers and to push beyond the boundaries. The collective input from our students, staff, families, and community partners continues to energize me to explore new opportunities for our school.

My life as an educator blends with my personal life. I am the proud husband of Teresa Carney who is the Principal of Wilson Middle School in Natick, MA. Together, we brought Jack and Sofia into this world in 2005 and 2006.

Teresa and I earned our Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Counseling together from Assumption College. I later earned a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Education Leadership and Management from Fitchburg State College. In 2006, I returned to Fitchburg State College as an instructor in the Education Leadership program and taught graduate students for six years before assuming the Superintendent of Schools position in Uxbridge, MA.

My six years working in the Blackstone Valley undoubtedly attracted me to Grafton High School and I am thankful to be here.
